The new year calls for new ways of looking at one of painting’s conundrums; how to create movement within a static medium. This session’s artists are all masters of presenting familiar motifs in new and exciting ways. Some, like California’s Richard Mayhew and Celia Reisman accentuate the form and seduce the viewer through the element of color. France’s Chaim Soutine’ s use of movement takes us on a topsy turvy ride away from representation, while Rosa Bonheur ‘s natural realism focuses on the soul of the animals which belies the idealized scene they are often placed in. The session concludes with the Uk’s fast rising art star Flora Yukhnovich’s reinvention of the French and Italian Rococo with an undercurrent of contemporary issues.
Format of class begins with a 90 minute Zoom session on Fridays and includes weekly painting assignments done on gessoed paper and some research. Students send a photo of their completed assignments to me via email by Thursday at 4pm. I send a group email with all the photos before we meet to discuss on Friday in Zoom. Demonstrations, lecture topics and weekly assignments are given in Zoom and recorded in case you miss class.
