The Shape of Things: painting what we see or imagine Fridays March 27 - May 22nd
Fridays on Zoom 10:00 am to 11:30 am
No CLASS April 17th and May 8th
In this 7 session class over 9 weeks we are dedicating painting time to explore one of the basic tenants of 2 d art, translating our ideas into shapes. That sounds simple enough but for anyone making a painting, the process of representing a 3 D world onto a 2 D surface can become a bit of boggy marsh. HAVE NO FEAR!
In the Shape of Things we are looking at some masters of technique for inspiration painting Cities, Glass, Backyard Scenes and Abstract concepts. What appears to be a daunting challenge of Gerhard Ricther’s city views, Janet Fish’s transparent glass still lives, and the sublime compositional narrative’s of Fairfield Porter’s scenes from suburban life will become a weekly assignment centered around painting shapes. It is through this lens we will also explore the work of Lebanese artist Saloua Raouda Choucair and the influence of architecture on her abstract forms.
There are four weekly assignments done on gessoed paper that isolate specific techniques or approaches to painting, The final two weeks will be spent on an individually directed painting based on a new perspective or approach you gleaned from class.
The class is part art history, part process painting and most definitely for all experience levels, beginner to advanced.
