Painting Workshop: Cinematic Narrative in Painting

IMG_1126 (1).jpg

Filmmaking is a large part of contemporary culture. In this six-week painting class we will examine storytelling and the relationship between painting and cinematic perspective. We will begin with Delacroix who instilled his history paintings with the emotional influence of color and look at how artists set the stage with light, and direction in their work. Experimental projects include using methods and materials to tell a story with landscape/still live or figuration and working with scale and shifting points of view. This class will give you insight on how to frame the composition, direct the viewer’s eye and look at your own work with fresh eyes. If you are a reluctant painter then get ready to call “ACTION!”.

For beginners and advanced painters alike.

In this brisk six-week class, students will deconstruct representation into abstraction to understand the underlying principals of abstract composition. What makes an abstract painting successful? How do color; light and texture come together to convey meaning? We will look at the work of Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell and other fantastic femmes who were painting inspiring paintings in New York alongside their male counterparts. For the beginner as well as advanced painter, this course will loosen up that tight grip you are holding on your painting style.
