Paint Like a Girl: The Women Abstract Expressionists

In this brisk six-week class, students will deconstruct representation into abstraction to understand the underlying principals of abstract composition. What makes an abstract painting successful? How do color; light and texture come together to convey meaning? We will look at the work of Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell and other fantastic femmes who were painting inspiring paintings in New York alongside their male counterparts. For the beginner as well as advanced painter, this course will loosen up that tight grip you are holding on your painting style. We will be working in both a small and large scale so be prepared for some action painting and get ready to have some FUN.

Carve, Cut and Print Relief Printmaking Workshop with Wendy Willis

Join me and my ultra-talented printmaker sister, Wendy Willis, as she guides us through a weekend of reductive linocut carving. This a take no prisoner’s method of printmaking and Wendy is a master of it. The image included with the class info is an 11–color reduction. We will take a two-color process (white, black and one color) to create an edition of 10 prints. The weekend begins with a little soiree of wine and nibbles and an introduction to the process. We will help you select an image to work from for the weekend. Saturday begins with coffee and a continental breakfast and the drawing separations and carvings begin. We will nourish you with a delicious lunch so by the end of day one you will print your first color. After a good night’s sleep, we will begin Sunday with a recap over a light breakfast and carve and print the second color. ET Voila! We will toast the end of our weekend with a salute to accomplishment and our new edition of hand pulled prints.
